History

Between 1991 and 1994, UBC Properties Trust developed Faculty & Staff Housing in Fairview/Acadia to serve the growing need for short-term accommodations for new Faculty & Staff. UBC Properties Trust constructed 268 rental suites under the direction of UBC Housing & Conferences, who have owned and maintained these buildings and subsequently converted them to student family housing.

In the early 2000’s, UBC Properties Trust leased land from UBC in Hawthorn Place to provide additional Faculty & Staff Housing. This responded to the initiatives of TREK 2000, which identified Faculty Renewal as an important objective for the following eight years. This need was further expressed in planning documents, requiring that 20% of the proposed housing at UBC be rental and that 50% of the new residential housing on campus be targeted to households where at least one member works or studies on campus.

Since 2001, Village Gate Homes, a subsidiary of UBC Properties Trust, has been developing, leasing and managing rental housing for UBC’s full-time, permanent faculty & staff. Village Gate Homes now has 467 homes, including rental apartments, city-homes and townhomes across 9 buildings. Set amidst fully landscaped green spaces all buildings are located in either the Hawthorn Place or Wesbrook Place neighbourhoods.
